Valentine’s Day is coming up and I don’t know about you but I feel as though it is the most under appreciated holiday. Even people in committed relationships seem to have strong feelings against it. I’m really don’t understand why though. Valentine’s Day is so fun! Hearts, flowers, and chocolate are all on my list of favorite things. What’s not to like? I LOVE love!

Having a daughter makes Valentines Day even more special in our house. Seeing my husband come home with a bouquet of roses just for her turns me right to mush. Watching him bring a smile to his little Valentine’s face is gift enough for me each February. (If he asks though, you can remind him I like diamonds…just kidding, sort of.)

Little girls have a way of making everything a little more fun. She’s so excited for Valentines Day that a heart inspired hat was a must. When I asked her what colors she wanted her answer was predictable- pink and purple! Of course. I don’t know why I even asked.

I decided to make her hat using Sweet Roll Yarn by Premier Yarns from Joann Fabric. I love the ease of yarn cakes and the Raspberry Swirl was the perfect color combo for my girly girl. It was the first time I’ve used Sweet Roll Yarn and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how plush it is. I will definitely be adding it into my regular yarn rotation.
To create the heart shaped pattern I used a V shaped puff stitch. In this pattern I’m calling it a Heart Puff Stitch because don’t they look just like the cutest squishy little hearts?!

Notes:
- I chose to change colors every 4 rows to create uniform color block pattern. To do this I cut my yarn (leaving a tail to weave in) at the end of the row and set aside the rest of the length of that color until I reached the color change in the yarn. I then cut the yarn at the color change, joined the yarn with the new color and continued crocheting. Feel free to continue using the cake through its natural color changes if you prefer. The color block pattern can also be achieved by using 3 separate skeins of yarn.
- Hat is worked from bottom up starting with the brim.
- To make your hat larger or smaller increase or decrease stitches around brim by multiples of 3.
- For larger hats or a hat with more slouch increase the number of rows by 2 rows at a time.
- Save this pattern to your Ravelry site for easy reference.

For row 4, do you make the heart puff stitch in the same stitch as the chain 3 or the next stitch?
I sc crocheted 60 sts around for row 1.
At end of row 2, I have 20 hearts but 79 sts! Am I reading the pattern right, there’s a ch 1 in the middle of ea heart puff st & a ch 1 between hearts?
I can’t seem to figure out row 2. No matter how I do it I either get too many stitches or not enough. If u chain 1 skip 1 and sc to repeat that only gives u 2 stitches instead of 3 which I thought u said that the heart puff and chain 1 = 3 stitches. If I do chain 1 skip 1 and sc into middle of puff heart then chain 1 skip one and sc into middle of the 2 puff hearts I get too many stitches. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.
I love this pattern…. Could you tell me how I could adapt it (daughter’s 7 and almost 10) and ladies size. I don’t know how to adjust patterns yet. Thanks so much 🙂
Hi thank you for sharing!
I’m a little confused about rows 13-16. Am I repeating the ch1 for each repeat in the round? And does the sc2tog apply to the previous rounds’ sc’s only, or are we Sc2tog the SC and the ch1 together?
Thank you
Hi Lorna!
You only sl st and ch 1 to join the rounds together, then repeat sc2tog around for the rest of the round. So for instance: R13 should have 1 ch1, 30 sc2tog, and then sl st to join. The idea is just to reduce the stitches and close the opening at the top of the hat.
Hope this helps! Happy Valentine’s Day.
Hello, I love this pattern! I’m fairly inexperienced and noticed that as I started my 6th row that I have more than 60 stitches. Is this normal? I’m trying to do the math and not doing a good job of it! I’d love to know where/if I went wrong!
Thanks!
Hi Bri! You should have 60 stitches in each round. Every heart puff stitch with the following ch 1 counts as 3 stitches, so you should have 20 hearts in each round if that helps you keep track as you go along. If you have more of this it sounds like perhaps you added stitches somewhere in row 2-5.
Best of luck! I’d love to see it when you’re done!
